Gordon School wins third consecutive State 'MathCounts' tournament

Students claim both team, individual titles for fourth time in five years

EAST PROVIDENCE — The Gordon School once again won the Rhode Island "MathCounts" tournament, which took place in early March. Twenty teams from public and independent schools around the state competed.

It was Gordon's fourth win in the past five years in both the team and individual categories. The Rhode Island Math Counts competition is hosted annually by the Rhode Island Society of Professional Engineers.

Ten Gordon students led the way to win the team competition: Barrington resident Maude Smith-Montross; Providence residents Josie Harrison, Diana Szilagyi, Natasha Connolly, Andrew Song, Riley Hewitt, Isabella Ragona, Phoebe Porder, Daniel Duarte-Baird; and Warren resident Reina Paratore.

In the individual competition, Providence residents Andrew Song and Natasha Connolly placed first and fifth respectively, out of the 134 students who participated. All ten Gordon students finished in the top 50, with six finishing in the top 20.

Song was scheduled to join two other top scorers to represent the Rhode Island at the national competition in Washington, D.C. in May. As the coach of the championship team, Eric Kravitz is set to serve as the Rhode Island coach at the nationals. This is the sixth consecutive year that Gordon has sent a team member to the national competition.

Students are chosen for the competition according to their performance on a demanding written test given to hundreds of sixth, seventh and eighth graders in public and independent middle schools across the state.

Gordon's teams have historically stood out at the competition by having a strong proportion of female students, and this year's team featured seven female students out of the ten.

Gordon has fielded a MathCounts team every year since 2004.  In 2012, Gordon implemented a new math curriculum, Math in Focus, and Kravitz joined as the schoolwide math specialist.

“When this year's team members were in Kindergarten and first grade, Gordon made a long-term investment in inclusive and demanding math instruction that engages and challenges every student,” explained Head of School Noni Thomas López. “The success of this team, and its gender balance, confirm that an inclusive program can bring out the best in every learner.”
