Huskies recognized for fourth academic award in a row

The Mt. Hope girls soccer team impressed in the classroom as well as on the field this season, as the team was named Academic Award winners by the United Soccer Coaches Association, for the fourth year in a row.

“It’s well deserved. This is one of our team goals every season,” said girls soccer coach Kerri Giarusso. “It’s an honor to receive this award. The girls work hard to achieve it and I am very proud of of each and every student athlete in our girls soccer program.”

The award  is given to high school and collegiate level teams and recognizes exemplary performance in the classroom during the 2019-20 academic year. Teams must be coached by an active USCA member and compile a composite grade point average of 3.25 or better, on a 4.0 scale, for all players on the roster.

According to Mt. Hope Athletic Director Christy Belisle, the USCA honored 312 high school teams, 134 boys teams and 178 girls teams. Mt. Hope’s girls soccer program was once again among those top performers, academically and on the field.

On the field, the Huskies finished their 2020 Division I, Covid-shortened season with an overall record of 3-4-3 and a division record of 1-4-2. The team lost a preliminary playoff game to South Kingstown, 2-0, to end their season.

The girls soccer team will have a lot to look forward to in 2021. Though they will miss their best offensive player and leader, Angela Lee. The co-captain and striker led the Huskies offensively, with 9 goals, 2 assists and 20 points. The team will also graduate co-captains Leah Oliver on offense and Meghan Mancieri on defense. Kyra Boucher, Mia Merritt, Jacklyn Teixeira and Gillian Greenslade also will graduate in June 2021.

Still the Huskies have a lot to build on. Tori Coroa should fill in nicely at striker next season. The junior scored 7 goals this fall, and added 5 assists for 19 points. Sophomore Abby Razzino (5 goals, 10 points) and junior Laura Johnson (3 goals, 2 assists, 8 points) should also help the Huskies up front. The team also will bring back starting goalkeeper Logan Levesque. The junior made 70 saves in 200 minutes of play.
