EAST PROVIDENCE — Juan Diaz scored three of the five East Providence High School football touchdowns, including two 20-plus yard rumbles in the third quarter to put the locals ahead for good as the Townies defeated visiting Mt. Hope, 36-29, in their non-league 2019 season opening contest played Friday night, Sept. 13, at Pierce Memorial Field.

Mt. Hope scored first, before Diaz put the Townies on top 7-6 with his first score, five yards, in the opening period. But the Huskies answered with two more scores to regain the advantage. The Townies cut into their deficit before the break on a 50-plus yard TD pass from quarterback Justin Pena to freshman wide out Jahad Davis Pinto, leaving the locals trailing 21-13 at intermission.

Diaz, E.P.’s senior featured back then rushed for his pair of TDs in the third quarter giving the locals a lead they would not relinquish. Later, defensive end Richard Maciel dropped into coverage to intercept a Mt. Hope pass, which helped set up Davis Pinto’s 28-yard TD to cap the E.P. scoring.

“The guys never quit. Even when we were down, they were confident we were going to win game and they never stopped,” EPHS head coach Jay Monteiro said.

The Townies improved to 1-0 overall. East Providence begins its Division I league schedule Saturday, Sept. 21, at Pawtucket’s Pariseau Field against St. Raphael. Kickoff is noon. The contest was moved from its expected Friday night spot because of the continued concern about the EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) virus outbreak.
