East Bay girls fall to La Salle in hockey finals

Eagles unable to upset Rams, lose in OT in Game 2

The East Bay Girls Co-op hockey team's hopes for a Division I championship came up just short this season.

Needing a win to extend the best-of-three series, East Bay played well on both ends of the ice but eventually lost 2-1 in overtime against La Salle on Saturday night.

The Game 2 loss spelled the end for the Eagles, who dropped the first game of the series, 4-2, on Friday night.

Kat Barker provided the offense for East Bay in Game 2, while Ellee Kopecky made a number of key saves in net for the Eagles.

"Ellee Kopecky played amazing," said East Bay Coach Michael Cox. "Everything we expected and more."

Coach Cox said Ellee made at least 35 saves against the high-powered La Salle offense.

Coach Cox also praised the efforts of numerous Eagles, including Barker, Ella Hanley, Maeve Harrington, Peyton Whittet and Sarah Yee.

"We had an amazing season," said Coach Cox. "We gave LaSalle everything and they certainly did not have it easy with us. We did have our chances in both games, with their goalie coming up big also."

La Salle finished the regular season undefeated in league play; the Rams' only losses coming against non-league, out-of-state competition.

"They had four very good lines," said Coach Cox.

In the Division I series opener, Maeve Harrington netted a goal in the first period for the Eagles, and Barker scored a goal on a break-away in the second period. Barker's goal knotted the score at 2-2, but LaSalle struck twice in the final period and escaped with a 4-2 victory.
