The Hurricanes boys' high school hockey co-op between Mt. Hope, Rogers, Middletown, Tiverton and East Providence made it two wins in a row following their 4-1 victory over the South Kingstown/Westerly co-op Thursday night, Jan. 23, also at St. George's School rink in Newport Thursday, Jan. 23.
The locals, who beat the West Warwick/Exeter-West Greenwich collaborative, 5-3, in their previous outing on January 18, improved to 2-4-2 (6 points) in the Division II standings at the time.
Austin Silvia potted a pair of goals for the locals, both coming in the first period as the 'Canes built a lead, 2-0, they would maintain the rest of the way. Colton Kerrison and Evan Agren assisted on the initial tally. Silvia's second was unaided.
Neither side scored in the second period. S.K./Westerly got one back about five minutes into the third before Agren, from David Silvia and Nathan Carpenter, restored a two-goal lead for the locals with some six minutes remaining in the game.
Mt. Hope's Ben Browne then sealed the victory with his third goal of the year, off a neat back-door feed from Agren and the secondary assist to another Mt. Hope contributor, Ethan Labollita. It was Labollita's first point of the season.
Nicoletti was a bulwark between the posts for the Hurricanes, making 31 saves as S.K./Westerly outshot the locals, 32-12, in the contest.
"I think it’s huge for the Mt.Hope and E.P. guys," said Hurricanes' assistant coach and Mt. Hope rep on the staff Cam Rancourt. "Our junior/sophomore class had only won two games in their high school career before this winning streak were on. They show up everyday and work hard in practice and in the film room, and now they are finally seeing the rewards of all their hard work."
The 'Canes are back in action Sunday, Jan. 26, in West Warwick at the Magiera Rink, but with a time change. Instead of playing the Coventry/Johnston co-op that evening, puck drop is now set for 10 a.m.
