The Bristol Warren Regional School District will send a final check to former Superintendent of Schools Mario Andrade this Friday, officially closing the book on the decade-long relationship between the two. The $15,000 payment is the last of four payments, totaling $100,000, part of a settlement agreement between Dr. Andrade and the school committee that was signed in late June, when the superintendent resigned with a year left on his contract.
Dr. Andrade resigned amid pressure from school board members and parents who were frustrated by the district’s response to ongoing student behavior problems at Kickemuit Middle School, principally, and Hugh Cole Elementary School, secondarily.
In their signed agreement, the two sides agreed not to discuss the resignation or settlement publicly, but EastBayRI obtained a copy of that agreement this week, three months after requesting it from the district.
It states that Dr. Andrade would receive a $55,000 payment from the district on or before June 28. Three additional payments of $15,000 each would be made on July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 20, provided that Dr. Andrade not obtain “permanent and substantially similar employment” before Sept. 20.
School district attorney Mary Ann Carroll confirmed this week that both the July and August payments were made, and Dr. Andrade confirmed on Tuesday that he is currently an educational consultant, but he has not accepted any permanent positions. Per the agreement, he would be free to do so next week.
Dr. Andrade did not receive any benefits after June 30, including health coverages, as the $100,000 payment was in lieu of his contractual salary, stipends, unused sick and vacation time, or any other compensation. If he had served the final year of his contract, Dr. Andrade would have earned about $165,000 this year, a combination of salary and educational and experience stipends.
After spending time as assistant principal of Rogers High School in Newport and principal of Central Falls High School, Dr. Andrade joined the Bristol Warren district as assistant superintendent in November of 2009. He became superintendent in 2014 and was two years into his second, three-year contract when he resigned.
