WESTPORT — Calls from several motorists came in to Westport Police at around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, regarding a red Ford pick-up truck being driven erratically.

The truck was reported to be moving at a high rate of speed, passing cars and almost striking a white Jeep head-on while swerving all over the road.

Subsequently, said Detective Sgt. Christopher Dunn, the Ford pick-up pulled into the parking lot of Westport Gas at 634 American Legion Highway.

Police officers encountered the operator, identified as Joseph Allison, 41, of Easton, Mass., and, after an investigation by officer Michael Jacques, Mr. Allison was placed into custody, Charges included operating under the influence of liquor, third offense; negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

The Westport Police expressed thanks motorists for calling the department about their observations of erratic driving.

According to the National Travel Highway Safety Administration, the Fourth of July has the highest death rates due to drunk driving of any holiday.

The Westport Police Department urges residents not to consume any alcoholic beverages if they plan to drive and to utilize sober drivers or car services rather than driving impaired. The department also encourages drivers to continue to report any suspected impaired drivers to the department.
