Westport man wins Back Eddy striped bass tournament

Three-day tourney won with combined bass and bluefish weight of 25.42 pounds

Posted

Fishing off LU-SEA, Westport resident Chris Darmody won the Back Eddy's 23rd annual striped bass tournament this weekend, entering a combined 25.42 pounds of bass and bluefish during the three-day tourney.

There was plenty of food to go around Monday afternoon, when Back Eddy owner Sal Liotta opened the doors for the 170 anglers who had entered the tournament, plus their guests. With all fish entered donated to the cause, Liotta's staffed served sauteed, smoked, grilled and frittered bass, bluefish and tautog, getting a hand in the preparation from Smoke and Pickles across the street.

This year's tournament closing party was the first since 2019 — the Covid pandemic prevented it last year. Liotta said the fall tournament has morphed into sort of an end-of-season party, as most of the fishermen and women who entered will pull their boats in the coming weeks.

Fishing regulations prohibit the taking of bass under 28 inches and over 35. So unlike past years, when the biggest fish was often 40 pounds or more, the tournament was a combined weight event. Tautog were not weighed for purposes of the contest, and winners took home cash prizes, gift certificates and more.

"It's really become a good time," Liotta said Monday afternoon, pausing every minute or two to shake a hand.
