WESTPORT — Two people were hurt Tuesday afternoon when the partially completed roof of a new hotel “outbuilding” collapsed at 98 State Road, Westport.
Fire Department Captain Brian A. Beaulieu reported that, at approximately 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, Westport firefighters responded to a report of a structure collapse with injuries. This location is adjacent to a new Townplace Suites by Marriott that is also under construction.
The first arriving personnel reported that the roof truss system of the outbuilding, had collapsed.
The two people hurt fell approximately 15-20 feet. There was no entrapment. The injured workers were transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Westport Fire Department ambulances with reported non-life-threatening injuries.
The incident is under investigation by the Westport Police Department, Westport Building Department and OSHA. No theories were offered on the cause of the collapse — winds Tuesday were mostly calm.
Lafrance Hospitality and Opechee Construction Corporation began construction there on the 90-room TownePlace Suites by Marriott earlier this fall.
The hotel site is located alongside the Lafrance Hospitality-owned Hampton Inn Fall River/Westport and White’s of Westport.
The four-story, 55,000 square foot main structure is designed for those seeking an extended stay. Rooms include kitchenettes and there will be laundry facilities, pool and fitness center.
The opening of the TownePlace Suites by Marriott in Westport is expected to take place Fall 2020.
