Tiverton names top 10 graduating seniors

The following students are at the top of the 2021-22 graduating class of Tigers, who will receive their diplomas Saturday. They include:

 

1. Valedictorian Elise C. Flanagan

Elise is the daughter of Holly and Thomas Flanagan. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society, received the University of Rochester Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and is a Carson Scholar. During her senior year, she received the State House Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, The Newport County Retired Teachers’ Association Scholarship, Outstanding Science Student in the Study of Biology, David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, and the American Mathematical Society Award.  She played varsity Field Hockey and she is a member of the Drama Club, Peer Helping Network, Gay Straight Alliance and Band. Elise will attend The University of Vermont, majoring in Neuroscience.

  

2.  Salutatorian Katherine Zmich

Katherine is the daughter of Michael and Susan Zmich. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. She received the Diana Cruz Memorial Scholarship, Lt. Governor’s Leadership Award, State House Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition. Katherine received the Outstanding Math Student Award, Best Overall Science Student, Outstanding Science Student in the Study of Chemistry, Student Council Membership Award, and the Best Overall Student Council Member Award. She played soccer and lacrosse.  Katherine is a member of the Peer Helping Network, Student Council and the Executive Board. She is a Clean Ocean Access Intern, Middletown Rotary Event Volunteer, Holy Trinity Church Acolyte, and the Seapowet Beach Cleanup Organizer. Katherine will attend the University of Rhode Island, majoring in Chemical Engineering and minor in Environmental Engineering.

3. Emma Baker

Emma is the daughter of Thomas and Julie Baker. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. Emma received the St. Michael’s College Book Award for Academic Achievement and Social Conscience, State Senate Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, The Honorable Edward P. Sowa, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Lion’s Club Scholarship, Outstanding Computer Technology Student, David N. Cicilline Congressional Leadership Award, The Benjamin M. Wordell Memorial Scholarship, Carolyn St. Michel Class of 1986 Scholarship, Student Council Membership Award, and the Student Council Most Spirited Award.  She is the Gay Straight Alliance President, Senior Class Vice-President, Drama Club Class Officer, Mock Trial, Readers’ Forum, Chess Club and the Political Engagement.  Emma spent more than 100 hours volunteering for the Core organization’s “Who Am I Anyway?” and was a student representative to the school committee. She wrote and directed the short film “White Noise” produced by the Newport County Prevention Coalition, which was featured in The Sakonnet Times and premiered at Tiverton High School in April. Emma interned for the Prepare RI program in the summer of 2021.  She will attend Wellesley College, majoring in Psychology and English.

4. Ryan Snell

Ryan is the son of Thomas and Ellen Snell. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Rhode Island Honor Society. He received State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, Lion’s Club Scholarship, Outstanding PE/Health Student, Student Council Membership Award, Student Council Most School Spirited, and the James M. Saunders Science Achievement Award. He received the NSDC Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning and the Sage Student Award.  He played in the band and was a member of Student Council. He is an Eagle Scout and a church pianist.  Ryan will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, majoring in Geology.

5. Avery Carvalho

Avery is the daughter of Rania and Ricardo Carvalho. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. She received State House of Representatives Recognition and State Senate Recognition, Future Business Leaders of America Who’s Who, Future Business Leaders of America 5th place Social Media Strategy, Tiverton Prevention Coalition – Dr. William White Scholarship, the Fredrick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award, and the RI General Treasurer Seth Magaziner Young Leader Award.  School activities include RI Future Business Leaders of America State President, Tiverton Future Business Leaders of America, Political Engagement Club, Unified Tigers, and the Readers’ Forum.  She is a Hugh O’Brian Youth Leader, a Whitman scholar, and a National Future Business Leader Competitor.  Avery will attend Syracuse University, majoring in Finance.

6. Keira McQueen

Kiera is the daughter of Thomas and Cindy McQueen. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Rhode Island Honor Society. She received State Senate Recognition and State House of Representatives Recognition, Conrad Beaulieu Memorial Scholarship, and Lion’s Club Scholarship.  Keira is a member of the Volleyball Team. She is Co-President of Tiverton Prevention Coalition, a volunteer for the Newport Rotary Club, a member of the Brown University Youth Advisory Board and participated in the National Honor Society Toy Drive.  Keira will attend the University of Vermont, majoring in Biology.

7. Molly Richardson

Molly is the daughter of Joy and Robert Richardson. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. She received State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, Tiverton Athletic Boosters Scholarship, Hector S. Levesque Memorial Award, the Michael McCarthy Memorial Scholarship, University of Rochester’s George Eastman Young Leaders Award, the Outstanding Science Student in the Study of Physics, Student Council Membership Award, and Outstanding Junior Social Studies Student Award.  She is a member of the Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field Teams. Activities include Student Council Senior Class President, Portuguese Club, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Hugh Cole Elementary School, Tiverton Up With Schools Arts Summer Camp, and the Tiverton Junior Basketball League. Molly will attend St. John’s University, majoring in International Management.

8. Isabel Del Deo

Isabel is the daughter of Staci and Ben Del Deo. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. Isabel received State House of Representatives Recognition, State Senate Recognition, The Benjamin M. Wordell Memorial Scholarship, Tiverton Athletic Boosters Scholarship, David S. Frerichs Jr. Memorial Scholarship, 36 and NEA-Tiverton Scholarship. She is a member of the Tennis and Track & Field.  In tennis she has achieved Second Team All-Division, Division 3 2nd Team Singles and a Newport Daily News Athlete of the Week.  Her activities include Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America, Yearbook and Chorus.  Isabel will attend Salve Regina University, majoring in Psychology.

9. Kaylie Cabral

Kaylie is the daughter of Steven Cabral and Karen Logan. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. Kaylie received State Senate Recognition and State House of Representatives Recognition. She played Volleyball and received Second Team All-Division.  She enjoys Skeet shooting and was active with Special Olympics. Kaylie will attend CCRI.

10. Paige Klos

Paige is the daughter of Bethany Pierce Klos and Richard Klos. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Rhode Island Honor Society. She received State Senate Recognition, State House of Representatives Recognition, Aspiring Educator Award, Herbert & Claihorne Pell History Medal, and she placed 5th in the State Leadership Conference for Future Business Leaders of America for Social Media Strategie.  Paige completed 640 hours of Community Service. She played Field Hockey her Sophomore, Junior and Senior year, Mock Trial Team her Sophomore and Junior year, Future Business Leaders of American her Sophomore and Junior year.  She volunteered at Pocasset Elementary School and at the Art & Literacy Camp from grades 7 to 10. Paige will attend Rogers Williams University, majoring in Elementary Education.

Mike Rego has worked at East Bay Newspapers since 2001, helping the company launch The Westport Shorelines. He soon after became a Sports Editor, spending the next 10-plus years in that role before taking over as editor of The East Providence Post in February of 2012.
