Tiverton graduates 126 seniors

Posted

As Tiverton High School's graduation ceremony began Friday evening, Principal Susan Craven reflected on her years as the principal of the Class of 2025, a position she has held since the class was still in middle school. Through it all, she said, she saw growth:

“What a gift that has been to watch you change from middle schoolers with backpacks bigger than your bodies to young adults ready to step into the world with purpose and pride.”

Those young adults are going to be going in numerous directions in the coming years. Some to college, some to the armed forces, some to the workforce. But all of them will have the years that they spent growing together.

Saluatorian Cooper Thomas also reflected on the growth he has gone through over his time in Tiverton, and opted to quote pieces of advice he's been given over the years.

He quoted teachers, authors and films, including “a loving heart is the truest wisdom,” from Charles Dickens.

“While it might seem corny, I believe that hating less is the best way to make the world a better place.”

He told his fellow seniors that they should be proud of their accomplishments and advised them to listen to others and love each other during the next chapter of their lives.

Thomas gave way to commencement speaker Dillon Sheridan, the coach of the football team, who thanked students for allowing him to be part of their lives and called the past six years the most meaningful of his career.
“As your teacher, coach, mentor, I’ve had the privilege of watching you grow and mature and become the incredible young adults that you are today.” Sheridan said. “I’ve done my best to teach you, but the truth is you’ve taught me as much as I’ve taught you.

Valedictorian Nolan Page also reflected on his time in the schools, opting to advise on what he could, rather than trying to overstate his knowledge.

“I believe that the goal of a high school education is to foster a lasting character in graduates, a character capable of supporting themselves and their community.”

Class president Ellery Pacheco celebrated her class, reflecting on the years they spent together, from the blunder years of middle school to the present.

“I’d like to take us all the way back to the start of middle school, when graduation was a million years away and not just a couple of hours. We all remember the days of oversized backpacks, questionable fashion choices, and the frantic search for any sense of identity while trying to figure out the dreaded politics of lunch table seating,” Pacheco said.
She added that while middle school is not the only thing that shaped them into the people they are today, the friendships that they formed during those years played a huge part. She also talked about how high school has changed their perceptions of the passing of time.

“Never did we think about how we’d have our last bus ride home after a win from a way game with teammates.”

Meet our staff
Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
