Team gives up just first goal of season

TIVERTON — The Tiverton Tigers girls’ varsity soccer team held on to their undefeated record this past Wednesday, October 23, as they defeated the Classical High School Purples 2-1 on Senior Night at home.

Unbeaten and unscored upon all throughout the regular season, the Tigers faced a true challenge, and some anxiety, going into Wednesday night’s Division III game. Their opponent, the Purples, also had a perfect record, along with Rhode Island’s top goal-scorer, Michaela White, on their team.

“They were kind of panicking, had a lot of nerves,” said head coach Jim Gauch.

Despite that anxiety, Tiverton proved that they were ready to battle, getting on the scoreboard first with a goal from Victoria McGovern early on in the match. That set the pace for the Tigers the remainder of the half as they took control of the field and continuously pressured Classical’s goalie, Nina Karlin.

“Their vision has improved and their movement off the ball has improved,” Mr. Gauch said. “We’ve been working on that all season and it’s showing.”

Come the second half, however, the Tigers were clearly getting tired, spending more time at their own end. Though a goal from Tiverton’s top scorer, Mariah Ramos, put them ahead by two about midway through, Classical answered by putting a shot into the back of the net shortly after – the first time any team has been able to do so since October 24, 2018.

“I was upset at first,” said Tiverton’s sophomore goalie, Emma Lopes. “But I just had to let it go.”

Neither she nor Karlin would let another ball in for the rest of the night; Mr. Gauch credits Tiverton’s defense – particular, Kayley Nagle and Shayla Travers – for helping to keep White and the rest of the Classical offense at bay. The win advanced Tiverton to a 15-0 record, giving them the top seed.

“We definitely needed this win, we loved this win, and we just had a great time out on the field,” Lopes said.

After playing their final regular season game away against Woonsocket on Thursday, October 24, a 1-1 tie, the Tigers will focus on defending their championship title as they head into the playoffs. A post-season schedule has yet to be released from the Rhode Island Interscholastic League.
