“We’re senior citizens,” joked head coach Dave Landoch before the game. “We have 10 seniors. They are all great kids. They work really hard and we’re coming together.”
The Tigers best attribute is their team height.
“We’ve got to make sure that we utilize it,” Coach Landoch said. Senior forward Caleb McConnell and senior center Caleb Purcell will start with senior guards Bobby Bettencourt and Brendan King and sophomore Jace Kelly at point guard.
Tiverton started strong and managed to play the Townies even in the first quarter, 12-12. Then fell behind to the athletic Townies 21-25 at the half.
King hit a 3-pointer and scored 5 of his 8 points in the first half. Philip Kenny, a junior guard also netted a tres and scored 5 of 7 in the first half.
John Mello scored 4, McConnell and Bettencourt each added 2 and Fernando Deramo drained a 3-pointer.
Deramo sank another three and scored 5 of his 8 points in the third quarter as Tiverton kept it close, 38-30.
The Tigers scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to matched their first quarter effort. Brendan Sowa netted a 3-pointer, Mello and King each scored 3 points. Purcell sank a pair of free throws Ben Lopes snared one.
Coach Landoch and the Tigers will travel to Disney for a Holiday tournament during Christmas break, before returning to Division 2 action next year.
“We’re looking to move the ball and be as aggressive as possible,” he said of the team’s style of play.
“We have some tough competition coming,” he said of Division 2.
“But the goal is always the same. Get to the playoffs. We’re going to make a big push this season.”
