The Tiverton girls basketball team scored 18 points in the fourth quarter to survive a third-quarter comeback and beat D-1 St. Raphael Academy 48-35 in a non-league home game on Wednesday night.
“It was a big win,” said head coach Mike Brigham.
Jah’niece Branch, Jenna Deldeo and Cami Oliveira led the team in scoring as Tiverton improved their record to 2-1.
Branch, a junior, started the game hot and scored 7 of her 13 points in the first quarter.
“Jah’niece is a force in the paint,” said Coach Brigham. “She has averaged about 14 rebounds through our first three games.”
Tiverton scored 12 points in the second quarter and took a 21-12 lead at halftime. Deldeo, a senior co-captain, scored 6 of her 12 points in the first half. Sophomore Tori Murray scored 5 points in the second quarter.
St. Ray’s came out of their slumber in the second half and scored 14 points in the third quarter to cut the lead, 26-23. They may have taken the lead if not for Oliveira who drained a 3-pointer and a jumper for 5 of her 12 points in the third quarter.
“Cami is our strongest offensive weapon,” said Coach Brigham. “She can hurt you many ways with her outside jumper and with her athleticism.”
Tiverton scored a game high 18 points in the fourth quarter and held St. Ray’s to just 9 points. Oliveira, Murray and Izzy Williams all sank 3-pointer in the fourth quarter and Deldeo scored 4 points and Branch netted 3 points in the paint.
Deldeo and Ellery Pacheco are the Tigers’ senior captains. Both are strong leaders, according to Coach Brigham.
“Jenna is a big part of our offensive and great on the boards,” he said. “Ellery is our defensive catalyst. I assign her to guard our opponent’s strongest player.”
The Tigers have a great bench as well this season with sophomores Murray, Beatrice Pimentel and Sara Poland.
“They come off the bench and provide much needed depth to our team especially on offensive,” he said. “They come in and we do not miss a beat.”
Tiverton Scoring:
Jah’niece Branch led the Tigers with 13 points. Jenna Deldeo and Cami Oliveira each scored 12, Tori Murray scored 8, Izzy Williams scored 3 and Sara Poland scored 1.
