Commencement sees 79 seniors receive diplomas

PROVIDENCE — St. Mary Academy-Bay View graduated its Class of 2022 on Monday evening, June 6, at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. The Class of 79 graduates have all been accepted into college, with plans to pursue higher education degrees at 51 different colleges and universities. Collectively, the Class earned $20,239,898 in college scholarships.

“Our class is an extraordinary family filled with performers, writers, poets, scientists, athletes, artists, and social activists. We have accomplished so much already, not only in the classroom, but on the court or the field, on the stage, and in our community,” said Class Valedictorian Gabriella Osorio-Palo, who plans to attend Georgia Tech in the fall, during her Valedictory Address. “We are only 18 and have our whole lives ahead of us, but I know that whatever we choose to do or wherever we end up, we will always be extraordinary people who will accomplish extraordinary things.”

The graduation ceremony included two graduating student awards, the Catherine McAuley Woman of the Year Award and the Frances Xavier Warde Person of Courage Award.

The Woman of the Year Award, the most prestigious honor given to a graduating senior, was awarded to Faith Blais. As Woman of the Year, Faith was recognized for positive impact on the Bay View community. She reflects the unselfish values of Catherine McAuley by improving the quality of life of those with whom she comes in contact; by her welcoming attitude towards others and her understanding of her responsibility to service. She also possesses a firm commitment to her academic pursuits and epitomizes the qualities for which Bay View stands: knowledge, character, compassion and a determination to make the world around her a better place.

The Frances Xavier Warde Person of Courage Award was given to Brooke (Finn) Maloney, who exhibits the positive actions, character, strength, and commitment to personal goals demonstrated by Mother Frances Xavier Warde. Mother Frances Xavier Warde was the first Sister of Mercy to establish religious communities in America despite the overwhelming obstacles of prejudice, personal suffering, and poverty.

"Don't worry if you're not sure about what you want to do with your life or what you want to major in. You have time. Trust me – the journey isn't always as straight and clear as we all imagine or hope,” said Bay View President Sister Marybeth Beretta to the graduates. “You will come to some junctions that you never anticipated, and you will need to make adjustments or change your plan. Be gentle with yourself in the process."

“As a class, we have grown over these past four years. All of our expectations of high school crumbled in our sophomore year. We persevered together, through quarantines, Google meets, hybrid learning, and so much more. But we always had our Bay View community to support us through these unprecedented times. We lost many high school experiences but learned to appreciate small gestures that we once took for granted, such as an unmasked smile or a high five from a teammate. Thankfully, we were able to have a somewhat normal senior year,” said Hamilton College-bound graduate Emily McDonald to her fellow graduates at Class Day leading up to graduation. “I will always cherish the time we spent together and the wonderful memories we have created. You all have so many incredible talents, and I can’t wait to see the amazing things you do in life.”
