Portsmouth woman charged with 2nd-degree child abuse

PORTSMOUTH — A 43-year-old Portsmouth woman was arrested last week and charged with second-degree child abuse, police said.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, officers responded to a report of a wellbeing check and made contact with Nicole Lee Woll, 43, of 2703 East Main Road, at her home, according to police. 

“Upon speaking with the subject, officers observed her to be intoxicated and emotional,” the police report stated. “After checking on the wellbeing of the victim, he advised officers the subject punched him, put her arm around his neck, and now his ribs were sore.”

After further investigation, Woll was arrested and also charged with resisting arrest.

She was held at the police station until her arraignment the following day at 2nd Division District Court in Newport, police said.

Monday, Sept. 4

James Leon Toppa, 58, of 129 Pear St., was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), first offense, after being pulled over on Middle Road because he was not wearing a seat belt, police said. Toppa was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Tuesday, Sept. 5

Nikolas Coelho, 28, of 13 Tinkham Lane, Mattapoisett, Mass. was charged with DUI, first offense, after being pulled over for speeding on Route 24 North at about 12:25 a.m. According to police, Coelho was traveling at about 98 mph in a zone posted for 50 mph. Coelho was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Saturday, Sept. 9

Mark Alen DeMello, 35, of 1295 Stafford Road, Tiverton, was charged with violating a no-contact order. Officers responded to a Park Avenue home around 2:45 p.m. to investigate a report of the violation. The victim was a 60-year-old woman who lives in Portsmouth, police said.

Ryan Kevin Monahan, 30, of 145 Bradford St., Apt. 4, Bristol, was charged with DUI, first offense, after officers responded to a report of an erratic driver and caught up to him on Boyds Lane around 9:20 p.m., police said. Monahan was also cited for refusing a chemical test, police said.
