Phyllis Rowland, 89, Tiverton

Phyllis M. (Thombs) Rowland, age 89, of Tiverton, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022, surrounded by her family. She was the loving wife of the late Monroe King Rowland.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Mary (Jacobsen) Thombs. Phyllis spent her youth in Michigan, followed by living the majority of her life with her family in San Diego, Calif., before retiring to Tiverton, Rhode Island 30 years ago.

A graduate of Royal Oak High School, Class of 1950, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology in 1954, followed by a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education in 1956, both from the University of Michigan.

A dedicated member of the Amicable Congregational Church in Tiverton, Phyllis was a long-time member of the Tiverton Garden Club, The Union Public Library Association and the Women’s Club of Newport County.

Survivors include three children, Pamela Rowland of North Kingstown, Carl Rowland and his wife Kimberly of Tiverton and Jay Rowland of La Mesa, California; a sister-in-law, June Thombs of Michigan; and three nephews, Noel, Mark and David Thombs. She was the sister of the late Richard Thombs.

A celebration of her life will be held on May 5 at 10 a.m. at the Villages Club House, 120 Schooler Drive in Tiverton, R.I. Her funeral and burial will be private.

Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Union Public Library Association 3832 Main Road Tiverton, RI 02878.

Arrangements are in the care of Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, Warren.
