Little Compton's ‘Windmill House' sells for $1,225,000
LITTLE COMPTON — Mott & Chace Sotheby’s International Realty announces the sale of 581 West Main Road, known as the Windmill House, for $1,225,000.
Sold for the first time in its 133-year history, the five-bedroom house is famous for its one-of-a-kind architectural integration of a once-functioning c. 1812 windmill. Renowned American artist Sydney Burleigh added his artistic touches to the interior of the mill house by incorporating bas-relief sculptures, inscriptions, and terra cotta washes to many of the home’s plaster walls.
The second dwelling, the four-bedroom “Dinghy,” was built in 1934 to complete the picturesque seaside family estate.
“Since I was a child, the Windmill House has always had such a magical presence in Little Compton,” says Cherry Arnold of Mott & Chase Sotheby’s who represented the buyers.
“The combination of incredible architecture and history, breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, and pastoral farmland surroundings make it a truly special property,” she added. “I’m thrilled for the buyers who are the perfect next stewards of this beloved Little Compton estate.”

According to data available from Rhode Island Statewide Multiple Listing Service, this is the third highest single-family sale in Little Compton this year.
