Little Compton succeeded at holding its first remote Town Meeting Tuesday evening and managed to pass a budget in the nick of time.

Just hours after all had tuned out, the fiscal year came to an end at the stroke of midnight on the final day of June.

Perhaps the evening's biggest challenge, reaching the required quorum of 157 registered voters, was achieved as over 200 voters wound up participating in the Zoom session. Voters had been asked to pre-register for the event no later than 4 pm on Friday, June 26, and were then sent the necessary information allowing them to participate on Tuesday night, June 30.

“This is the one chance we have to do this,” said Town Council Chairman Robert Mushen as he and others tried to encourage voters to turn out.

With Town Moderator Scott Morrison leading the way, the meeting lasted around two hours and featured more discussion than some other in-person town meetings of recent years.

Voters approved the budget as presented by the Budget Committee but there were seveal amendments and debate over alternative funding for affordable housing as well as the town's legal budget.

“Moderator Scott Morrison did a great job as did Town Clerk Carol Wordell who worked hard to make everything work,” council member Larry Anderson said later.
