Letter: Tiverton was promised something great and the library has delivered

To the editor:

On Thursday, February 13, the Library Director and Library Budget Committee (Carol Herrmann and myself) presented the library FY2021 budget to the town budget committee.

There was a comment made by Ruth Hollenbach during the meeting that I have been thinking about and wanted to address.  She said, “The town was promised wonderful things with the library, but it turns out the building has been a problem.”

Have there been issues with the building? Yes.  Is there maintenance that needs to be done on the building continuously? Yes.  Does that mean the town didn’t get the wonderful things it was promised? Absolutely not.

Even with the issues that have come up, this building is a wonderful part of our town.  It has given back in so many ways via the wonderful programs like outdoor concerts, children’s movement programs, painting classes, story times, more book groups than I can name, programs on sustainability and so much more.

None of these programs, over 500 that over 12,000 people in our community attended last year, would have happened if that building was not built.  I am in the building a lot between board work, a teenage daughter and just for myself, and I see how many people are enjoying that building.

So often I hear people say hello to each other and stop to talk, teens are in and out working on projects and meeting their friends to hang out and do homework or play games, tutors are working with children, the meeting rooms always have someone in them and so many people work from the library instead of being home.

This library is a wonderful part of our community. Our town was promised something great and with the help of an awesome director and a magnificent and dedicated staff it has delivered!
