To the editor:

It is easy to agree that we all want our town to continue to improve, to do more for less. The community and those elected need to think of the town first, and personal agendas last.  The true definition of community is the ability and desire to work together.  Together we can use fresh, unbiased ideas to solve the issues we face … the landfill closing, trash pickup, casino revenues, and strategic financial focus on how we see Tiverton in the future. We need to get along.

Positive, inclusive discussions from a variety of council members, not just one group, is where our solutions will be found.

My concern for Tiverton is that TTA (Tiverton Taxpayers Association) has grown into an organized group of followers, with only one focus – lower taxes.  By doing so, without input from others in town, they can create a plan/budget that could result in irreparable damage to a system which now provides assistance to our elderly residents, supports community services – police, fire, town management – and provides for the education of our town’s children at a good level. 

Yes, I am opposed to voting a full slate of TTA nominees, or any one dimensional group for that matter, because “block” leadership diminishes solution-finding and represents only one segment of the community. 

Balanced government needs diversity of thought to address town issues.  We are a community. Let’s vote for all parts of our community to be represented.
