To the editor:
Did you know that the Town of Tiverton has over 6,000 Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (OWTS) within its boundaries? That includes septic systems and cesspools, representing around 90 percent of homes and businesses in town. As homeowners and business owners, it is our responsibility to use and maintain these systems properly. Doing so brings so many benefits:
· It costs far less to pay for maintenance than to pay for full replacement.
· It avoids lowering your overall property value.
· It helps keep pollutants out of our water supplies and waterways.
This year, the Town of Tiverton along with the Tiverton Wastewater District (TWWD) are introducing the SepticSmart program to the homeowners and business owners in our community. Developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the purpose of the program is to raise awareness and promote the value of properly caring for septic systems through the daily activities of homeowners and business owners. Simple and easy steps can go a long way in keeping OTWS in tip-top shape.
Our official SepticSmart Week is September 14-18, 2020. In partnership with the Town, the TWWD will be embarking on a robust campaign. Be on the lookout for Septic SAM (Septic Awareness Man) displays around town and information about how to be a responsible septic system owner. If you see Septic SAM, snap a picture with him and submit it to the TWWD via email (info@twwd.org) or via our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/TivertonWWD). Doing so will enter you into our contest to receive a free septic system pump out and inspection.
Together, we can all make Tiverton Septic Smart!
