Letter: Sanctuary resolution not the answer to gun divide

To the editor:

These (or below) were my comments made during the June 3 Tiverton Town Council meeting regarding the 2nd Amendment Resolution for the Town of Tiverton.

I think we can all agree that we’d like to see an end to gun violence. I think there are different opinions here tonight on how to get there. It’s complex, it’s not just one thing. I believe we all need to start talking to each other to solve this and I don’t believe these resolutions are a way to build bridges.

The most recent laws passed in Rhode Island (the domestic violence gun bill and the red flag law) take guns away from dangerous people and don’t infringe on law abiding gun owners. I don’t believe more guns everywhere will make us safer and I get the sense that those in favor of this resolution do believe that.

One of our councilors, Justin Katz, has shared his opinions about the red flag law – he seems to think it’s an overreach – and doesn’t want to support storing these guns should they become confiscated.

If I understand correctly many people here tonight in favor of this resolution will say it’s the person – not the gun. The red flag law certainly addresses that problem – taking guns away from people deemed dangerous to themselves or others.  I have faith that our police chief will use his discretion in enforcing this law where appropriate and confiscate guns when necessary.

I hope we find common ground some day so that our country doesn’t continue to be listed among the top six countries with the most gun deaths in the world.

Thank you for your time.
