To the editor:
We condemn the recent anonymous and cowardly act of racism that occurred in the town of Little Compton during the first week in October. Presumably under the cover of darkness, someone taped an abusive screed of hate over a political school committee sign that had been posted on the property of a bi-racial couple and their children.
The author wrote “Black lives” and then put a single, black line through the letters. Although the author writes that the sign's hate is not directed toward the children, “Black lives” suggests that both black people and the Black Lives Matter movement should be removed. Ridiculous.
As long as signs like this one surface, Black Lives Matter must be heard, not silenced. The author of that sign does not speak for us, nor, we like to think, many who live in Little Compton.
We wish the family the best, as we work to make Little Compton a welcoming and supportive community for all who live here.
