To the editor:
Tiverton Town Councilors Donna Cook and Nancy Driggs have recently written letters
encouraging Tiverton voters to not vote in the upcoming recall on October 10. Their
rationale is that by voting you are supporting an attempt by disgruntled former candidates,
who were not elected in 2018, to nullify the results of that election.
For the recall to succeed at least 939 voters must vote in favor of the recall of Katz and
808 in favor of the recall of Coulter. That represents 40% of the votes that they each
received in the last election. If fewer than those numbers vote to recall then the recall will
fail on a technicality.
That is what Cook and Driggs and the TTA want to see happen. They want you to not vote so that the recall will fail without them having to show a resounding voter support of their cause. If the number of voters voting for the recall are just one short of the required amount then the recall fails. It won't matter how many vote against it.
My continuing advice is to exercise your civic right and duty by voting. Don't take the
chance that the recall might fail because you chose to stay home. A failure to vote will
be the same as voting against the recall even if your intention was to support it. If you
believe that Katz and Coulter are doing a good job then support that belief by voting against
the recall. If you feel they are not deserving of remaining on the Town Council then vote
for the recall. But either way vote. Don't be misled by the rhetoric of Cook and Driggs.
