Letter: Americans deserve so much better from a President

To the editor:

In 2015, Donald Trump called Sen. John McCain a loser and not a war hero just because he was captured, saying:...”I like people who weren’t captured.”  That sentiment was disgusting on its own, but it was especially disgusting from a draft dodger.
Time has past, and Donald Trump is now ending his first term as President Donald Trump.  Looking over his time in office, I have several ‘likes’ about a President to share — actually they are ‘don’t likes’ to improve on Trump’s odd word order:
I don’t like a president who lies virtually all the time and who brags that his hunches and ideas far outshine expert opinion and data-driven science.  Thanks to his smugness, COVID-19 has killed nearly 140,000 Americans to date!
I don’t like a president who places his own political fortunes ahead of our national interest.  He governs like a mob boss.  And like mob bosses, he treats women shabbily.
I don’t like a president who sees enemies instead of opponents and who seems happy only when denigrating and bullying others.  He uses racist images and language in virtually every public utterance.
I don’t like a president who cozies up to international strong men and who belittles and marginalizes America’s traditional allies.  Russian meddling in our elections is a disgrace.
I don’t like a president who places in cabinet positions individuals who seek to minimize the work and reach (they are expected to roll back the previous gains) of their departments.  Dozens of vital environmental and health regulations have been rescinded.
I don’t like a president who demands absolute loyalty and even fealty.  While replacing senior leaders he calls them losers, disasters, scum, and worse.  He uses even more abusive language to describe and confront journalists.
I don’t like a president who believes he is above the law and who installs as Attorney General a man whose singular focus is to act as his enabler and protector.  No one is above the law in the USA.
I don’t like a president who is so cowardly that he would never hold a rally in California.  He calls peaceful protestors terrorists, thugs, and enemies of the state.
I don’t like a president who is an economic ignoramus, believing that the economy and the stock market are equivalent and that tariffs gain money for the national treasury.
Finally, I don’t like a president who seems thoroughly unable to honor the Constitution, to treat everyone with respect, or to inspire us to care for all others.
I offer this sad litany without any gladness or any sense of human superiority.  I am simply convinced that President Trump is entirely unsuited for his elected position.  Americans yearn for and deserve so much better.
