Letter: America needs this ‘Average Joe’ for President

To the editor:

Joe Biden is a good guy.  No one with horse sense would call him otherwise.  He speaks with us, not to us.  He is silly sometimes, patting shoulders, kissing babies, and racing ahead of his words.  His faith has helped him overcome searing personal tragedies and open up to others with empathetic sincerity.  Joe happily roots for the University of Delaware football team, no matter the Blue Hens’ record.  He is nuts about his family and terrific to his friends.  He is your average Joe.

Average?!  Yes, Joe Biden has the traits and values of average Americans.  He is honest, pleasant, dependable, and loyal.  He is also determined.  Why is he even running for the White House this time?  Because he believes that Trump is a danger to America, to democracy, and to our leadership internationally.  He is certainly not running for personal glory or enrichment.  Remember selfless duty?  Remember the belief that opponents are not enemies?  Have we forgotten that average Americans are good people?

I want an average Joe as president, someone with intelligence, decency, and common sense.  I believe that average Americans can rise above racism and live by the Golden Rule.  All we need is an average Joe to show us the way with kindness and humility.  And who but an average Joe would have the foresight and goodness to ask a superstar like Kamala Harris to serve alongside?  I’m all in for this average Joe!

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
