Seven candidates will compete for seven seats on the Tiverton Town Council in this November's general election. And while most current council members hope to be re-elected, two have decided to bow out this year.
Councilors William J. Vieira and Donna J. Cook did not submit candidacy declarations by last Wednesday's deadline. Neither could be reached for comment prior to deadline this week.
With Cook and Vieira's departure, the race for town council includes incumbents Denise deMedeiros, Joseph C. Perry Jr., Michael S. Burk, Jay P. Edwards and Deborth G. Janick. They will be joined by hopefuls Dennis J. Milbourne and John G. Edwards V.
Edwards is no stranger to Tiverton politics. He was elected to the council in 2016 and served on the Tiverton Library Board of Trustees. After an unsuccessful run for State Representative in 2020, he more recently served as chairman of the Tiverton Budget Commission.
“I’ve been on the council a couple times before and I figured now was a good time to step up and serve again,” said Edwards.
“Right off the bat, I would want to completely revamp police pension oversight, and establish the Tiverton Investment Committee,” he said. “Another area I would try to take a look at is the Industrial Park, and try to stimulate the economy around the town, taking a closer look at parcels that are zoned commercially and haven’t been sold yet.”
In other races:
Tiverton Town Clerk
Incumbent Joan B. Chabot is running unopposed to retain her position as town clerk.
Tiverton probate court judge
Incumbent Richard P. D’Addario has also filed for re-election to be appointed as Judge of Probate Court. He is running un-opposed.
Tiverton Budget Committee
Currently with two vacant seats, write-ins could come into play this November. The terms of members Erica Arruda, Joseph R. Souza, Thomas B. Haley, and John G. Edwards V, the current chairman, are set to expire, and none have declared their intention to run again. Incumbent Secretary Daniel J. Deren, of 1542 Main Road, has filed for re-election.
Tiverton School Committee
With two seats set to expire in November, incumbents Deborah A. Pallasch and Elaine D. Pavao will face off against challenger Charles Page III.
In Little Compton races:
Little Compton Town Council
It will be a crowded field in the town council race, as two Republican and two Independent hopefuls will challenge all five current incumbent council members seeking re-election.
Seeking another term on the council are incumbents Andrew W. Iriarte-Moore (D), Patrick A. McHugh (D), Paul J. Golembeske (R), Gary S. Mataronas (R), and Robert L. Mushen (R). They will be challenged by Republican hopefuls David A. Beauchemin and Maureen R. Rego, and Independent hopefuls Polly G. Allen and Mikel A. Focarelli.
Allen, who the outgoing Little Compton School Committee chairwoman, is leaving that post in hopes of winning a council seat.
Little Compton Town Clerk
Carol A. Wordell, who has served for nine terms.
Little Compton Town Moderator
Republican incumbent Scott A. Morrison is running unopposed.
Little Compton School Committee
With five school committee seats up for grabs, Travis H. Auty, a Democrat, is the only incumbent seeking re-election, as current committee members Hannah Ayotte, Rita Kenahan, Michael Rocha and Polly Allen did not declare their intent to seek re-election by last week's deadline.
Candidates include incumbent Auty and hopefuls Mark A. Gleicher (D), Megan T. Gonzalez (D), Jonathan F. Babbitt (R), Susan E. Kinnane (R) and Brandon E. Pineo (R).
