Two face multiple gun and drug charges following Tiverton car stop

Two Massachusetts residents are being held without bail after officers found a large quantity of suspected fentanyl and crack cocaine, as well as a gun and other weapons, during a traffic stop on Main Road Sunday afternoon.

Kayla Cowdrey, 31, of 2001 Osborne St, Apt. 1, New Bedford, and Joshua K. Cummings, 34, of 2669 South Main St., Apt. 1, Fall River, were each charged with possession of fentanyl with intent to deliver, possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver, and obstructing a police officer. In addition, Cowdrey was charged with carrying a pistol without a license, possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence, carrying a dangerous weapon while committing a crime of violence possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam), possession of weapons other than a firearm, and driving with a suspended license.

The arrests came after police pulled the car Cowdrey was driving over on Main Road at about 5:20 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they initiated the car stop as neither occupant was wearing a seatbelt. Upon speaking to the pair, officers said they were initially given false names before Cowdrey and Cummings admitted their true identities.

As police spoke to them and noticed drug paraphernalia in the car, Cowdry admitted concealing two bundles of suspected fentanyl in a pants leg. Police also recovered a small glass jar containing suspected crack cocaine from one of Cummings' socks.

A subsequent search o the car revealed two plastic bags containing about 800 small bags of suspected fentanyl, a plastic bag containing a large quantity of suspected crack, an additional bundle containing about 30 small packages of suspected fentanyl, additional bags and jars of suspected cocaine and crack, and a partial Alprazolam pill. Behind the driver's seat, officers found a bag containing a 9mm handgun, and also recovered digital scales, boxes of sandwich bags and rubber bands, six cell phones, a machete, and a folding knife.

In total, the suspected fentanyl seized weighed more than six ounces, with just under two ounces of suspected cocaine and crack.

Cowdrey and Cummings were arraigned in Newport District Court and ordered held without bail.
