Barrington residents can drag their yard waste bags and barrels back to the side of the road this weekend — the yard waste pickup program will resume next week.
According to Barrington Department of Public Works Director Alan Corvi, the contractor hired to pick up the yard waste will return to its normal collection schedule starting Monday.
MEGA Disposal had suspended its yard waste collection services for most of April — town officials said MEGA had cut back because illnesses and quarantine requirements associated with the coronavirus had limited available staffing.
On Friday morning, April 24, the town announced MEGA would begin collecting yard waste again on Monday, April 27.
Mr. Corvi added that the town was in discussions with MEGA officials about how the town would be "made whole for MEGA's suspension of yard waste collection for the weeks missed in April."
Mr. Corvi said that the private contractor may extend its yard waste collection program further into December for an additional two weeks to compensate.
The town manager had been asking residents to refrain from putting their yard waste bags and barrels curbside until MEGA resumed its collection services.
Residents are always welcome to bring their recyclables and yard waste to the recycling center on Upland Way. The center is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 8 a.m. to noon.
Barrington's brush chipping program has remained uninterrupted this spring — any residents who need to have brush chipped, should call the Barrington DPW at 247-1907, and add their brush-chipping stop to the department's list.
