Wildcats thrash Holbrook 79-74 on senior night

Owen Boudria put on another clinic as the Westport basketball team beat Holbrook 79-74 in front of a packed senior night house on Wednesday. The win improved the Wildcats record to 12-6 and more importantly upped their power ranking to 10th in Division 5.

As tradition during senior night, Westport head coach Scot Boudria spoke poetically with a touch of heartfelt humor about the seniors before the game.

“New to Westport, but important to the team,” he said of senior transfer student, Alex Krynicki. “You give us physical strength that every good team will always need. And yes, it’s a foul when you make a player from the other team bleed.”

Of soccer star and self-made hoopster Will Quinlan he said, “We all saw your athleticism and talent, that is why we knew you’d be quite good. Jumping, rebounding and playing great defense…Will will be a major contributor in the playoffs as long as he stays away from Seekonk and other places that will give him a concussion.”

Dirt Dog Max Gallant received accolades for his play. “I saw Max in little league playing for the Cardinals with determination and grit. For the past two years, you’ve brought the same energy and passion and also some of that Maximus wit. You will always have a place in my heart and a friendship that is bonded in steel.”

Of his own son and star player, Owen Boudria, he said, “Life lessons that we have learned have been more fulfilling and extremely fun with you at my side. You are an extraordinary person, not just in sports and the things that you do on the court, but instead, in the aspects of life that truly matter.”

He stated that the road isn’t over for this group from, “Bestport.” That they have some business to take care of in this season’s D-5 tournament.

Wildcats out-hustle, out-muscle and out-gun Roadrunners

The Wildcats were in battle mode against the bigger Holbrook team. The Wildcats out-hustled, out-muscled and out-gunned the 18th ranked Roadrunners. Westport scored 17 points in the first quarter, 22 in the second, 19 in the third and 21 in the fourth and led 39-35 at halftime. Owen Boudria was again at his best, scoring a game high 33 points in every way possible. The athletic Boudria slithered his way to the basket from all angles with the quickness and grace of a gazelle. He made layups, 3-pointers, jumpers and a giant-sized dunk that induced the Westport crowd into a frenzy. The senior was also good defensively, swiping 7 balls and pulling down 5 rebounds.

The supporting cast also looked shipshape and playoff ready with their hustle and gritty play. Quinlan, who has worked himself into an offensive threat, drained a pair of 3-pointers for 6 of his 8 points in the first quarter. The senior also pulled down a handful of rebounds and played solid defense. Sophomore guard Cole Boudria scored 16 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Will DeJesus netted 11, Gallant scored 6, and Dane Leary added 5. While Kynicki didn’t score, he played ferocious defense and kept the Roadrunners on their toes every time up the court.

Westport hits the road for their final two games. They play at Carver on Tuesday, 2/18, at 1 p.m. and at Diman on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
