Westport United boys soccer prevails in Columbus Cup

Posted

Players from the Westport United Boys U12 and U11 soccer teams joined forces over the Columbus Day weekend to play in the Columbus Cup in Mansfield, which drew more than 100 teams from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. The team posted a record of 4-0-1 over the two-day tournament to bring home the title, allowing only six goals over the five games.

The defense was led by the outstanding play of goalkeeper Danny D’Onfro and strong back line play from Ryan Borges, Tommy Bernard, Cameron Cadieux, Marcos Dutra Africano, and Ben Cross.

On the offensive side of the ball, Westport United sustained pressure throughout the tournament and buried 13 goals over the five games, led by goal scorers Will Quinlan, Charlie Vernon, Ethan Gifford, and Jayden Desforges. The team also received significant contributions from the bench over the two-day tournament, including exceptional play from Noah Amaral, Nathaniel Wentworth, Landon Lima, Jake Cross, Owen Vernon, Henry Gillet and Carter Bates.

This was Westport United’s first time competing in the Columbus Cup. They were led by coaches Dan DaSilva, Sally Vernon and Matt Bates.

"The boys came together as a team, with a week’s preparation, and showed everyone at the tournament who Westport United is,” Coach Dasilva said. “They all took their roles seriously, committed their time, and solidly executed our soccer philosophy like they have been playing together from day one."

Both U11 and U12 teams look to continue their success as they play out the remainder of the regular season schedules over the coming weeks.
