The Westport River Watershed Alliance will welcome visitors to the River Center, their recently completed headquarters at the Head of Westport, on Saturday, October 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. The open house will allow guests to see the renovated “Head Garage” that now serves as the organization’s offices and learning center.
WRWA purchased the old garage in 2014 and, after a four-year process of permitting, permissions, design and fundraising, began construction last December. The renovation was completed in September.
The building features energy saving and pollution reducing technologies including LED lighting, highly efficient heating and cooling systems, and composting toilets. Solar panels will be installed on the south facing roof in the coming months. Most of the old pine and spruce boards from the old attic were salvaged and reused on interior finishes.
The first level has large aquariums that will display many of the species that live in the Westport River. The floor is painted with a large map of the watershed, created by local artist Barbara Healy. The space will be used for education programs and for occasional meetings and events.
The Westport River Watershed Alliance was formed in 1976, and, for the past few decades, had their offices in the Wing Carriage House on Main Road. The new location at 493 Old County Road is more accessible and will enable WRWA to better engage with the public to fulfill its mission to preserve, protect and celebrate
our important resources.
