A long-time collegiate field hockey coach is the new director of athletics and student activities for Westport Community Schools, following the departure of former athletic director Jason Pacheco in late June.
Shelly Morris, who coached Division I and II field hockey for more than 20 years at Northeastern University, Stonehill College and Ohio University, was hired this week by superintendent Thomas Aubin, following a six-week search. Morris, who holds a masters degree in sports leadership and a bachelors in recreation and sports management from Northeastern University, was one of three finalists for the position.
“I am honored and humbled,” she wrote in an open note to the Westport community.
“I am excited to begin cultivating relationships with the students, faculty and staff, as well as with people across the district, to help grow and sustain all of our programs. As we approach the new school year and fall season, I can’t wait to come together to support our students, display our pride, and lead with integrity.”
Pacheco, her predecessor, worked for nearly 11 years as Westport’s athletic director before leaving at the department’s behest at the end of June, after Aubin declined to renew his contract. Despite some community members’ requests at a recent school committee that the district reconsider Pacheco’s departure, Aubin said several weeks ago that the district is moving forward.
