The Westport Fair opens its gates for the 63rd summer this Wednesday, July 17, to Sunday, July 21 at the Westport Fairgrounds, 200 Pine Hill Road.

Featured will be the sort of fun and food that have made this fair a regional favorite since the first year back in 1956.

Most of the offerings have something to do with farm life.

There will be farm animal contests — pygmy and dairy goats, sheep, rabbits, cattle and more.

Tractor pulls — the massive powerful and garden variety will have their pulling strength put to the test in daily competitions covering a wide range of weight classes.

Other contests will seek to name the area’s premier bakers, canners, vegetable growers, quilters — the list goes on.

There will be horseshoe tournaments, Michael Higgins chain saw sculpture exhibitions, chicken barbecue, antique farm exhibits and demonstrations, carnival rides, games, and food of every sort .

Music will be supplied by groups including Home Brewed Band, Rednecks country band, South County Line country band, Cool Banana Wig Band, Goat Ropers Band, Toe Jam Puppet Band, and True Classic rock and roll band.

Gates open Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 10 p.m.; Friday from 6 to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 am., to 9 p.m. (carnival opens at noon both Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $5, children under 12 free. The fair is non-profit and proceeds benefit various local causes.
