Westport carries on town health work during state of emergency

WESTPORT — At its morning meeting on March 16, the Westport Board of Health recommended that the Board of Selectmen declare a state of emergency in the Town of Westport due to the risk to public health associated with the spreading coronavirus.  

The selectmen Board did so at its meeting later the same day.  

While the emergency continues, municipal town buildings including Westport Town Hall and Town Hall Annex are closed to the public, effective immediately, but all staff continues to work.

The Transfer Station and Recycling Center will maintain normal operation and schedule.  Payments are still in the form of checks or money orders only, No cash.

Health Department staff information:

  • The director is available for any questions or concerns by phone (508-636-1015), fax (508-636-1016) and email (armendom@westport-ma.gov);
  • Health Dept. staff are available by phone (508-636-1015), fax (508-636-1016) and email (health@westport-ma.gov);
  • Food service agent is ensuring that restaurant dining is closed and the carryout operation is limited to 25 people;
  • • The Title 5 agent continues to conduct perc tests and inspections;
  • The Animal Control Office (774-264-5129) continues to respond to telephone calls; 
  • The Town Nurse is available 8 am to noon by phone (508-636-1030), fax (508-636-1016) and email (Nursing@westport-ma.gov);
  •  Sharps (i.e. needles) disposal is available by making arrangements with the town burse only.

Health Department operations during the COVID-19 emergency continue to evolve.  The board will hold virtual meetings only for the foreseeable future; on line and phone access information can be found through the Town website, when the meeting agenda is posted.  

For anyone needing to drop off permits, plans and applications, the department will have a drop box available by the end of business on March 18, which will be located outside the front door of the Town Hall Annex at 856 Main Road.  This box is available for all departments in the Annex.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
