Westport boys win; A halftime salute to Mike Roy

n a night that featured a half-time tribute to long-time former coach Mike Roy, the Westport boys basketball team won handily against visiting West Bridgewater by a score of 60-45.

The win boosted the Westport Wildcats to 6-7 overall, 2-2 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference Comprehensive League. The West Bridgewater Wildcats fell to 5-10 overall, 2-4 in the league

Nick Collins led the way for Westport with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Connor Lecomte added 16 points.

Coach Roy, who guided the boys basketball team for 19 years, was honored at the half for nearly three decades of service to Westport schools.

He wore the hats of basketball coach, history teacher, assistant principal, and athletics director.

“Mike Roy played a huge role in making our boys basketball program as successful as it remains today,” current Athletic Director Jason Pacheco said.. “He really turned around the program during his tenure as head coach. It was obvious from the attendance of his former players Wednesday night that he really had a lasting impact on the lives of his players. Mike was tough, and pushed his student-athletes to work hard every day in class, practice, and in games."

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once.
