Westport voters chose Tuesday to approve the construction of a new middle//high school by a margin of 3,108 to 1,789.

Almost 41 percent of eligible voters went to the polls, and over 63 percent voted in favor of the new school project. The question had already passed at a special town meeting attended by over 1,000 residents.

The town will pay around $58.8 million of the nearly $97 million cost plus interest over the 30 year life of the bond with the Massachusetts School Building Authority paying the balance,

Residents with property valued at $400,000 will pay about $412 more per year in property taxes. Those owning property valued at $100,000 will pay an extra $103 per year.

The school is predicted to open by the 2021-22 school year. The approval also covers the cost of demolishing the PCB-ridden middle school. The new school will be built at that location.
