PORTSMOUTH — Wellness Week (previously known as Project Purple), will be celebrated from March 1-7 in Portsmouth and several special events will be held.

The Town Council Monday night approved a proclamation about the initiative by the Portsmouth Prevention Coalition (PPC), which promotes personal wellness, healthy choices and the “power of being you.” The Herren Project and the Newport County Prevention Coalition are also supporters.

“It’s really about supporting students who are making healthy choices and people who are recovering,” Marianne Raymo, PPC chairwoman, told the council.

Ms. Raymo said PPC members will be handing out purple ribbons to residents from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at Clements’ Marketplace, and ribbons will also be available at various local businesses as well as the Portsmouth Free Public Library, the clerk’s office at Town Hall, and Portsmouth Middle School and Portsmouth High School. Residents and businesses are invited to join other municipal departments in dressing up their buildings and homes with purple bows or purple lights.

Spread awareness and share your purple by posting on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Tag @PortsPrevention and use #purpleandproud for a chance to win a prize from Herren Project.

A free screening of “The First Day,” a film about Portsmouth resident Chris Herren’s road to recovery from substance abuse, will be shown at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6:30 p.m.) on Wednesday, March 4, at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Newport Campus Auditorium, 1 John H. Chafee Boulevard, Newport.

The sixth annual dodgeball tournament hosted by Youth to Youth will be held in the field house at Portsmouth High School from 6-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 5. Local residents are invited to form teams to square off against one another.

“Remember to order Advil,” council member Keith Hamilton joked, referring to the bumps and bruises members of the Town Council team usually suffer during the tournament.

‘Screenagers’ screening

The Parents Helping Students Organization (PHSO) has been given funding by PPC to bring the movie, “Screenagers,” to all students at the high school and eighth-graders at the middle school next week. The 47-minute film was written and directed by a doctor and mother who questioned the impact that excessive screen time had on her own teenagers and her patients.

A 67-minute version of “Screenagers” will be screened for parents at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 5, at the PHS auditorium. It will be followed by a discussion led by member of the local community, and materials will be available. Admission is free with a donation of a packet of gum.

Join the Herren Fitness Challenge by setting goals for steps, water intake, and exercise and track your progress using a FitBit, an Apple watch, or fitness app. Share your progress using #HerrenFitnessChallenge or e-mail prevention@herrenproject.org to enter daily drawings for prizes.
