Warren Town Council to consider flying BLM flag

Move would follow council resolution supporting Black Lives Matter movement

Posted

The Warren Town Council will meet Thursday evening to discuss whether to fly the Black Lives Matter flag over Warren Town Hall.
The council’s special meeting was called after a constituent approached council president Keri Cronin and asked for consideration of the flag’s flying. Ms. Cronin said that while she cannot speak for her fellow councilors, she doesn’t believe there will be opposition to the request:
“I have no reason to believe that thee would be any opposition by any of the other council members,” she said. “They all seem very supportive of this movement.”
If the council does vote to fly the flag, it would be the second step the council has taken in recent weeks to lend support to the Black Lives Matter movement. Earlier this month, council members voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting the group. It included not just a philosophical agreement with the movement’s principles, but also directives to plan future budget policy with an eye toward social justice, and directed use of the town’s financial resources toward that end.
Warren would not be the first East Bay town to raise the BLM manner. Bristol has been flying the flag over town hall for more than a week, and Barrington also passed a similar directive.
Thursday’s meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. For a link to the Zoom-based meeting, see www.townofwarren-ri.gov.
