EAST PROVIDENCE — The St. Mary Academy-Bay View "Players" theatre troupe's portrayal of 23 women who were French Resistance fighters living as political prisoners in the barracks of Auschwitz during World War II, recently received the first-place award at the 2025 Rhode Island State Drama Festival.

The group’s performance of the one-act stage play, titled “Who Will Carry the Word?” by Charlotte Delbo, captured the harrowing tale of resistance and bravery of women during WWII.

This year’s Rhode Island State Drama Festival, hosted at Hope High School in Providence, was a significant milestone for the school’s drama club, marking its second consecutive win at the festival. Additionally, six student members of the cast and crew earned all-state acting and technical awards, including Warren residents Ava Ellette Sousa, for lighting design, and Sophia Delara, for acting.

The performance at states send the Bay View Players to the New England Theatre Festival in New Hampshire, joining 12 other schools from across New England for a weekend of celebration through theater. The festival will include workshops that provide opportunities for actors to explore various genres and techniques.

“This play is about women risking everything for the good of many. It is an important lesson that instills confidence and passion in our students,” said Bay View Artistic Director Nancy Anastadis Peters. “The story transcends the historical context of WWII; it reflects a larger narrative about women's resilience throughout history.”

She added, “The students approached the material with passion and dedication, even honoring the real women by replicating their tattoo numbers as a personal tribute. I am honored to be part of their journey, helping them grow... into confident performers."
