Warren Police investigate post-rally assault, alleged KKK members

Officers say KKK call was 'unfounded'

Posted

Police are investigating an alleged assault following Sunday's anti-hate rally in front of Warren Town Hall, and have found inconclusive a claim Saturday by a resident who reported hearing members of the Ku Klux Klan talking.

In the assault incident, Warren Police Lt. Christopher Perreault said the woman called police at 3 p.m. to report being assaulted by a man as the rally broke up. He declined to comment further, except to say that the department is reviewing video footage and investigating the incident.

The other incident, which was referenced by one speaker during the rally, occurred at about 8:30 Saturday, when a caller to the department's TIP411 line reported overhearing a conversation by members of the Ku Klux Klan near the Warren Town Common.

'I had parked my car," she said in her call. "As I got out of my car, I heard from somewhere close, both a man and a woman, sounded middle-aged, (saying) 'We will take them down, we are the KKK.'"

The caller found the incident "quite concerning due to the recent events," and said it occurred near the Warren Town Common.

Lt. Perreault said officers looked for suspects in the area and spoke to several people who they determined were not involved. He said officers were unable to verify the claim, partly due to the vagueness of the caller's description.
