The Mt. Hope girls indoor track team won the school’s first ever Dwyer Division Championship at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on Saturday. The Huskies compiled 134.5 points to edge out defending champ, East Greenwich, who placed second with 125 points. St. Raphael Academy placed third with 67.5 points.
Freshmen Thea Jackson, Jessica Deal, sophomore Lola Silva and senior Emma Serbst were the top point scorers for the Huskies.
“The girls showed so much heart on Saturday,” said head coach Renae Chicchinelli. “They kept the goal insight and selflessly, gave it their all. Many achieved personal bests, even after jumping into several events that may not have been their number one event. I am so proud of them all.”
Jackson scored 30 points for the Huskies, placing first in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.60 seconds, a new personal record according to Coach Chicchinelli. Jackson also placed second in the long jump, second in the 4x200 meter relay with Silva, Karsyn Medeiros and Hannah Rezendes and fifth in the 55 meter hurdles.
“Between Jess and Thea they have just about every distance and sprint covered,” Coach Chicchinelli said.
Silva tallied 28 points for the team by placing first in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 16 feet 4 inches. She also placed second in the 4x200 meter relay, placed fourth in the 4x400 meter relay and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles.
Deal, a distance runner, scored 26 points for the Huskies, placing first in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11 minutes and 36 seconds. Deal also placed second in the 1000 meter and 1500 meter runs.
“Jess has incredible recovery time,” said Coach Chicchinelli. “She has been doing it all season and we backed her off to rest her for this meet. Her strategy was to do enough to win the 3000 and then race the 1500 and 1000.”
Serbst, a team co-captain with Karsyn Medeiros, scored 19 points for Mt. Hope. She placed third in the 600 meter run, second in the 4x800 meter relay with Claudia Green, Scarlett Drawbridge, Lucy O’Brien and fourth in the 4x400 meter relay with Green, Medeiros and Silva.
“Both captains are team players and are determined to do whatever necessary to help out the team,” said Coach Chicchinelli.
“I also had a handful of athletes go outside their comfort zone and willingly jump into events they weren’t necessary comfortable with,” Coach Chicchinelli said. “Chloe Carreiro and Olivia Neverka-Vinciguerra ran in the 3000 and Claudia jumped in the high jump. They were nervous but they wanted to help the team and all three scored points for the team.”
Long jump sweep
The Huskies swept the long jump with Silva placing first with a jump of 16 feet 4 inches, Jackson second with a jump of 15 feet 6.75 inches and Kali Rocha third with a jump of 14 feet 11 inches. Lilliana Redman placed seventh.
More top finishers
Ryan Coffey placed third in the high jump, Rocha placed fourth and Green placed sixth. Sonia Bradley placed fourth in the 3000 meter run and eighth in the 1500 meter run. Hannah Razendes placed sixth in the 55 meter run and Lilliana Redman placed eighth. Medeiros placed eighth in the 300 meter run. Green placed seventh in the 600 meter run. Neverka-Vinciguerra placed seventh in the 3000 meter run and Carreiro placed eighth. Drawbridge placed eighth in the 1000 meter run.
Mackenzie Forrestal and Bella Almeida threw the hammer for the team.
“The amount of personal bests was incredible,” said Coach Chicchinelli. “It’s really hard for kids these days to put themselves out there and try something. Most won’t. These girls proved to everyone they can do difficult things and I think everyone realized they could too.”
