Two outside contributors to East Providence schools test positive for COVID-19

YMCA counselor, Chartwells cook have been hit by the virus

EAST PROVIDENCE — Two outside contributors to the East Providence School District tested positive for COVID-19 as the week ended, Superintendent Kathryn Crowley reported Friday night, Oct. 30.

A staff member from the Newman YMCA in neighboring Seekonk, who counsels eight students total at the Whiteknact, Hennessey, Francis and Kent Heights elementary schools returned a positive result as did a cook at the high school employed by Chartwells, the district’s food preparer.

The superintendent said she was awaiting word in what grades were the students potentially exposed to the virus by the Y counselor.

And even though the high school has been closed due to an electrical issue, the Chartwells employee has been assisting in the supply of food to students while they engage in the distance learning program.

The Rhode Island and Massachusetts Departments of Health take over the cases, informing families and conducting contact tracing. The positive patients will begin a 14-day period of quarantine.
