Corrente claims heavyweight division, is named event's Most Outstanding Wrestler

The Kickemuit wrestling squad did, in fact, "kick" some tail at the 2025 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Middle School Championships held Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 1 and 2, in North Kingstown as the Junior Huskies finished second overall in the team event led by a trio of individual weight class winners.

The locals tallied 210.5 points to earn runner-up status behind only Feinstein-Coventry, which won the state title with 267. Chariho was third with 192.5. Kickemuit's three champs were the most of any team. A total of 33 schools competed in the meet.

For the Huskies, Will Corrente at heavyweight/275 pounds, Cam Ferreira at 70 and Matt Williams at 119 were the champions of their divisions.

Corrente scored a major decision victory by a 20-8 score in the final over Blake Morosetti of Davisville/N.K., the No. 1 seed in the class and to whom he had lost twice earlier in the season.

Ferreira won his title via pin in 1 minute, 16 seconds over Cameron Regnault of Ferri/Johnston. Williams' win was even quicker, in just 36 seconds over John Pablo of West Broadway/Providence.

Corrente's performance, including a victory over No. 2 seed Luc Cournoyer of Burrillville, earned the eighth grader the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award.

"I believe the team exceed not only my expectations, but everyone in the Rhode Island wrestling community as well," said KMS co-head coach Trevor King. He and Dominic Lombardo shared the position for the first time this winter.

Of Corrente's performance, King continued, "I think Will shocked the world in the tournament's last match and sent the entire gym into a frenzy."

The Huskies, as well, had a pair of second-place finishers. Dylan Cote fell to Joseph Colardo of Western Hills/Cranston via pin at 2:34 in the 88-pound championship bout while Hayden Lake was beaten in 2:04 by Logan Barry of Feinstein in the 112 finale.

In addition for Kickemuit, Jonah Dixon wrestled back to third place at 140, Henry McGovern finished fourth at 94, Brody McCormichk fifth at 82, Mubashiri Anurah sixth at 75 and Logan Fontana seventh at 165.

Also of note, Delaney Bagwell, the lone female on the team, represented Kickemuit in the girls' division, placing seventh at 124 pounds.

"We knew we wanted to build a 'close family' style culture with our kids just like we had when we were growing up. It played out in our favor and almost everyone on the team bought in fully. They pushed each other at practice and always cheered hard for each other during matches. We truly were a family. We kept one another up when we were up, and brought us back up when we were down," King said of the season as a whole.

He continued, "At the first practice, we also had our wrestlers write down three goals for this year. Going over them on the bus ride home after states and we saw how many of them met these goals, which is truly a special feeling as a coach. It keeps you coming back and anticipating the years to come."
