Woman seriously injured, rushed to hospital

A 27-year-old woman is recovering from a “freak accident” that occurred at a youth baseball game in Barrington on Saturday, Sept. 9.

Officials said a tree limb fell onto a woman who was watching a baseball game at Sowams School. Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said the woman suffered serious injuries, including multiple fractures.

People who witnessed the accident said they could hear a tree start to creak and people tried to get out of the way. The tree struck the woman. The Manville resident had been sitting in a chair next to the field, police said. The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m.

Barrington EMTs arrived on the scene shortly after the accident and transported the woman to a hospital. Chief Correia said the Barrington first responders checked on the woman’s condition over the weekend. Chief Correia said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Officials from Barrington Little League reached out to the local school department and asked about support services that they may be able to offer to families who witnessed the accident. Late Sunday afternoon, Barrington Public School officials sent out a district-wide email about the accident. The email thanked the prompt action of spectators at the game and Barrington’s first responders.

“While children were immediately removed from the scene to a different part of the Sowams property, many players and spectators witnessed this shocking and unexpected incident.

“We understand that students may have questions or feelings about what happened, especially if they were present at Sowams at the time. School social workers and mental health counselors will be available tomorrow, September 11, to meet with any children who need a supportive space to process this experience and navigate the emotions they may be feeling right now. Please contact your child’s counselor if you would like for them to speak with your student.”
