The East Providence High School wrestling team closed out the home portion of its 2023-24 Division I regular season schedule with a 48-24 victory over Coventry Wednesday night, Feb. 7, at Ramos Gymnasium.

The Townies improved to 6-2 in league matches at the time. East Providence finishes its regular season slate with a pair of road tri-matches: Tuesday, Feb. 13, with Cumberland at North Kingstown, 5:30 p.m.; and Thursday, Feb. 15, with Mt. Hope at Ponaganset, 7 p.m.

Prior to last Wednesday's outing, the Townies recognized their four seniors Marco Cordeiro, Steven Clark, Simon Palumbo and Matt Marlow as well as team scorers Ava Frazao and Trinity Clark.

Once action commenced, Deacon McShane put the hosts ahead right away with his pin at 106 pounds with about 30 seconds left in the second period and leading.

Brady DeRoy followed with an 11-6 victory for the locals 113. He never trailed after taking a 5-2 in the first, then up 9-4 by the end of the second.

The visiting Knotty Oakers got on the board with Stone Farnsworth's 2013 win over EP's Aydin Schifino in what was the most competitive bout of the evening. Schifino fell behind 8-2 after the first period, but twice nearly pinned Farnsworth, but couldn't finish his opponent off.

The Townies received a forfeit at 126 to go up 15-3 before Coventry ripped off three wins in a row at 32 (decision), 38 (pin) and 44 (pin) take a 21-15 lead.

X'Avian Hopper ended the spree for the locals, decisively winning his match at 150 by pin with only a few seconds left in the opening period.

Coventry broke the 21-all tie with 9-4 win next at 157, but gave the lead and basically the overall match right back to the Townies with a forfeit at 165.

At 175, EP's Max DiStefano raced to a 9-1 lead at the end of the first, eventually ending the contest at the exact mid-point of the second with 1 minute remaining.

Jordan Carl followed with a 6-3 victory at 190 pounds, upping the Townies' advantage to 36-24.

The last of the Oakers' three forfeits, which came at 215, preceded Steven Clark's Jr's resounding pin for EP at heavyweight about 1:15 into his match.
