Townies dominate Tolman for fourth-straight win

Third consecutive game with 40+ points over opponents

Forward pass? We don’t need no stinking forward pass.

The East Providence High School football team is proving that when executed properly, good, old-fashioned football can lead to dominant performances on the field.

Tolman High School of Pawtucket was the Townies’ latest victim, suffering a 40-14 drubbing as East Providence earned its fourth-consecutive victory and its third consecutive win where they scored 40 or more points. They are 4-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, sitting at the top of Division II.

“It’s going well so far,” said Townies quarterback Isaac Rodrigues. “We’re averaging a lot of points, the offense is rolling. But playing even better is the defense. A team hasn’t scored over 14 points on us through the whole season.”

East Providence’s only loss of the season came against Barrington in the season opener, where they let up a literal last-second touchdown in a defensive struggle that ended 6-0 in the Eagles’ favor. Since then, the team has found its rhythm and have embraced the defensive-minded, hard-running ethos of the Townies coaching staff.

“I think now kids are starting to really believe and put in that extra effort and people are realizing that East Providence is the real deal,” Rodrigues said. “Like it’s not a coincidence we put up 40 against Westerly and then 40 against SK and then 40 against Pawtucket.”

Rodrigues credited his coaching staff and offensive line for enabling him to shine in his first year starting at quarterback. He said that after losing a lot of leaders on the team, there was no telling how the team would fare this season. But they’ve taken their coaches’ advice, and thrived.

“It think it’s just been about East Providence’s ability to adapt and counter. Everyone’s put in a lot of work over the season,” he said. “I only speak for myself on this one, but I came in with the utmost confidence to be one of the best players in the state, and I think thus far I’ve proven it.”

East Providence next goes to Burrillville on Friday night at 6:00 p.m., then back home to face Classical High School on Oct. 16.
