With the Warren Town Beach busier than ever, the Town of Warren is now charging residents and non-residents to park.
The fee was instituted this month and will run throughout the season, when lifeguards are on duty. Residents will be charged $5 per day, but can choose to pay a one-time $5 fee to park for the season. The cost for non-Warren residents is $10 per day. Parking for veterans and seniors is free.
Warren Recreation Director Tara Thibaudeau said the fee was instituted to try to reduce the number of out-of-towners from parking in the lot, so more spaces will be available for residents.
“In the past Warren was one of the only free beaches from Providence to Newport,” she said. "We are not trying to discourage people from using any of the Town of Warren's facilities."
Usage has grown in recent years as water quality in the Warren River improved, and she said the beach and adjacent Burr’s Hill Park has become busier as residents seek to get out of the house.
“This year in particular, with Covid a lot of people are choosing to stay local, and more people are choosing beaches.”
Fees can be paid on-site, and the revenue generated goes into the town’s general fund, she said.
