A Tiverton woman died Thursday night after losing control of her car and striking a tree on Lake Road.

Jennifer M. Sylvia, 52, was pronounced dead at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River after rescue crews extricated her from her 2014 Subaru Impreza  at about 10 p.m. She was the only occupant of the car and police believe speed may have played a role in the accident.

Police first got a call about the accident at 9:53 p.m. When officers and fire department members arrived, they found Sylvia's car engulfed in flames and determined that she had lost control and struck a tree. Though she was trapped inside the burning vehicle, first responders were able to remove her and take her to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The area around 840 Lake Road was closed in both directions for about three hours as police investigated the crash and cleared debris. Tiverton police and fire fighters were assisted by the Little Compton Fire Department.

Though police believe speed played a role, the accident is still under investigation by the department's accident reconstruction team. Anyone with information pertinent to the investigation is asked to contact Tiverton detective Nicole Beauvais at nbeauvais@tivertonpoliceri.com, or Officer Joseph Barek at jbarek@tivertonpoliceri.com.
